Definition
Incident cases are defined as those people who developed a disease or sustained an injury for the first time in 2001.
Interpretation
For service planning; it is important to know how many people are affected or become affected by each disease. A detailed breakdown by age and sex is provided. Numbers of incident cases less than 5 at LGA level are not displayed in accordance with Victorian privacy legislation recently introduced.
Methodology
Incident cases for 2001 have been estimated for SLAs and aggregated to LGAs and Regions. For each IRSED/remotesness combination; by disease and sex; standardised incidence rates were calculated and compared to Victoria for 2001. These rate ratios by disease and sex were then imposed on the 2001 population in each SLA and summed to larger geographic areas. The total Victorian incident cases were estimated for the Victorian Burden of Disease Study 2001; after examining for each condition the internal consistency between available estimates of prevalence; deaths; remission and or incidence. Software (DISMOD) specifically designed for this purpose by Harvard University and WHO was used to model the results.
