Disability Adjusted Life Expectancy (DALE), 1996
Definition
Life expectancy captures only the mortality experience of a population. The World Health Organisation has developed a statistic known as the Disability Adjusted Life Expectancy (DALE) which adjusts life expectancy downwards for loss of health during years lived in less than full health.
Interpretation
The DALE is a statistic that reflects the Life Expectancy of a population adjusted for years lived in less than full health. DALE estimates are approximately 7-9% lower than life expectancy. This difference reflects the proportion of a lifetime spent in less than full health after weighting all causes of disability for severity. Comparing the DALE and the Life Expectancy for LGAs and Regions presents minor changes to the relative ranking of the health status of LGAs.
Methodology
To calculate DALE; the years of ill-health weighted for severity; are subtracted from the overall life expectancy to give the equivalent years of healthy life. DALE has been estimated for each LGA and health Region using a variant of the estimates of Years Lived with Disability (YLDs) based on prevalent rather than incident disease.
